What Is a Brain Injury?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) consider traumatic brain injuries (TBI) one of the most serious public health problems in the United States. Each year, over 2.5 million Americans sustain mild to severe head injuries that disrupt the normal function of the brain. These injuries frequently result from traffic collisions, sports accidents, terrible falls, assault cases, “combat situations,” and even medical malpractice incidents.

The brain is the epicenter of the human experience; this single organ controls how we think, feel, and express ourselves in the world. Sadly, brain injuries typically lead to a variety of cognitive, physical, and behavioral side effects and disabilities that impact the overall quality of a person’s life. However, despite brain injuries being so common in the United States, very few people understanding the daily challenges and limitations associated with brain dysfunction. For this reason, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is determined to spread awareness through its Change Your Mind campaign.

#ChangeYourMind

Each year, the Brain Injury Association of America kicks off National Brain Injury Awareness Month with an online campaign that encapsulates the organization’s mission statement. According to BIAA, their 2019 theme, #ChangeYourMind, “provides a platform for educating the general public about the incidence of brain injury and the needs of people with brain injuries and their families.”

The BIAA hopes this campaign will:

  • Empower individuals and families living with brain injuries
  • Encourage fundraising to facilitate ongoing research efforts
  • Promote resources and support options that can help people with brain injuries
  • Raise awareness about the health concerns associated with traumatic brain injuries

Over 8,000 Americans sustain mild to severe brain injuries in the span of a single day. Many of these victims will struggle to hold jobs, maintain personal relationships, and enjoy an independent lifestyle.
