Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor that is often prescribed to treat severe
stomach acid-related conditions. When a patient has too much stomach acid,
it can flow into the esophagus and cause severe medical complications.
Prilosec treats this condition by shutting down the pumps that produce
stomach acid.
The problem is that patients also use Prilosec to treat occasional heartburn.
In 2003, the FDA approved Prilosec OTC as an over-the-counter treatment
for simple heartburn symptoms. The FDA does warn patients about overusing
this product beyond the recommended 14 days, as it can lead to kidney
damage and other serious side effects.
Dangerous Prilosec side effects include:
- Kidney damage or failure
- Acute Interstitial Nephritis
- Lupus Erythematosus
- Low magnesium levels
A History of Prilosec Lawsuits
Since Prilosec was approved in 1989, countless patients have experienced
kidney failure, strokes, cancer symptoms, and heart attacks. Naturally,
many of these people sought compensation for their medical expenses by
filing dangerous prescription drug claims. In 2017, a federal panel combined
several lawsuits relating to Prilosec and Prilosec OTC into one multidistrict
litigation (MDL). As of September 2018, there are over 2,000 lawsuits
included in this MDL.
