Actos and Bladder Cancer
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warning that the use of Actos (pioglitazone), a diabetes medication, for over one (1) year has been associated with a forty-percent (40%) increase in risk for bladder cancer. It has been warned that patients who have been taking Actos to contact a medical doctor if they experience any of the following symptoms:
- blood or red colored urine
- an urgent need to urinate or pain while urinating
- pain in lower abdomen or back.

The oral diabetes medication, Actos, is made by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company and co-marketed in the United States by Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals. Actos belongs to a class of drugs called Thiazolidinedione, which work to lower blood glucose levels and increase the body's sensitivity to insulin.
